In September 2017, I was a bridesmaid in my cousin’s wedding. When the pictures came back from the photographer I could not believe that was what I looked like. Having been an athlete my entire life, reality hit hard that my 16 year old metabolism was long gone at age 29. The sad thing was, I went to the gym 3-4 times a week and ‘worked out.’ By working out, I mean I did what I decided was my rotation of an arm day, leg day, ab day, maybe a back day if I felt like it mixed with some cardio. I legitimately thought I was doing it right, boy was I wrong. Around the same time, I saw a post on Instagram about Bridge The Gap CrossFit. I had known Dennis for years, growing up in the same neighborhood. I saw his transformation and I wanted in! In December 2017, I met Aileen & Dennis for my intro. They were honest, supportive, and at no point shamed me for my previous attempts of fitness. I left feeling with a sense of relief- they are going to help me! And they have.
Two and a half years as a remote client (they create workouts for me that I complete at my own gym since I live too far to commute to every day class) has completely changed my mindset in regard to fitness and nutrition. When I first started, I was afraid of what my workouts would be, so I would not check until I got to the gym…they were hard b ut I knew I was working harder than I ever had on my own. And it felt great to accomplish so many things I never knew I could!
I remember feeling different, more confident in the gym. I could use a kettlebell for swings that once felt so heavy, I could put actual weights on the barbell for bench press! And probably my most proud accomplishment, I could do more than one burpee in a row without stopping. I was becoming stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally. And it motivated me to keep going!
I haven’t reached all of my goals yet, but I look back at how far I have come and I am so proud of the person I am today. I have also accepted that I am human and am not perfect, which was a tough sell. I know what I need to work on, and I know working out is my biggest stress relief, so I continue to crush my BTG workouts – even in quarantine! I have learned so much about my body, my strengths, and how to overall be a healthier person. The BTG community is filled with an amazing group of “normal” people, who openly embrace every single person who steps into the box wanting to better themselves. I have always felt at home at BTG, and I appreciate Dennis and Aileen more than I can express. They have helped me change my life for the better.
