What happens if I don’t stretch after exercising?
You’ve worked all day long. You hit the gym on the way home, crushed the workout, and now it’s time to jump in your air-conditioned car, beat the traffic, eat dinner and sit down on the sofa. Sounds like a good plan, right? Wrong!
We live in hurry up and go world and sometimes we miss things, or better yet, we don’t think the small things matter. Stretching is one of those “small things” that gets forgotten.
Imagine a rubber band you have laying around. Pick It up, stretch it and pay attention. At first if you pull that rubber band it could snap, and it only pulls apart a short distance. Now play with that same rubber band for a while and stretch it out. Guess what? Each time it will be able to go a little bit further and becomes a little longer. Our muscles are comparable to that rubber band.
Taking some time to stretch after each workout when your muscles are pliable opens up your range of motion and increases flexibility. Not taking proper care of our muscles and stretching leads to a change in our biomechanics and alters the way we move putting excess stress on our joints and tendons which can lead to pain and possible injury.
Take a few moments the next time you are finished working out, grab a stretching buddy and get to work. Your body will thank you.
